CarbonRun Secures $25.4 Million Deal with Frontier Buyers for River Liming Carbon Removal
CarbonRun and Frontier made history by signing the first-ever river alkalinity enhancement carbon removal deal.
Frontier buyers, including global giants like Stripe, Shopify, and McKinsey Sustainability, will pay CarbonRun $25.4 million to remove over 55,000 tons of CO₂ between 2025 and 2029. This marks a significant step forward in the fight against climate change, with river liming emerging as a promising new pathway for scalable, nature-based carbon removal.
River alkalinity enhancement, a method traditionally used to counteract acid rain, has now found a new purpose: capturing and storing atmospheric CO₂. By adding limestone to acidified rivers, CarbonRun not only repairs ecological damage but also enhances the rivers’ natural ability to sequester carbon. The method is already proven to improve ecosystems and fisheries, and now it holds the potential to reach gigaton-scale carbon removal.
Frontier’s Nan Ransohoff emphasized the groundbreaking nature of the agreement, stating that river liming is "cheap, scalable, and measurable," yet remains underexplored and underfunded. Luke Connell, CEO of CarbonRun, echoed this sentiment, noting that the funding will help advance research on the safety and scalability of river liming for carbon removal.
