CarbonRun Announces Grand Opening of West River Pictou Project
West River, Pictou – October 16, 2024
Today CarbonRun announced the grand opening of its West River Pictou project that will neutralize river acidity and restore the river’s ability to transport carbon to the ocean. This landmark achievement highlights CarbonRun’s dedication to environmental sustainability and climate action.
In the presence of local community members, provincial and municipal authorities, and industry peers, CarbonRun unveiled its innovative doser, showcasing how this cutting-edge technology is set to bring significant ecological benefits to the West River ecosystem.
CarbonRun's climate and river restoration solution combines decades of research and community-based restoration work. The company has adapted well-tested river restoration techniques originally deployed in Scandinavia and Nova Scotia to restore rivers from acid rain and increase river health and biodiversity. “By adding alkalinity to the river through crushed, natural limestone rock, we can dramatically improve water quality and absorb carbon dioxide from the land and atmosphere,” said Eddie Halfyard, CarbonRun Co-Founder and Chief Technology Officer. “In Nova Scotia, rivers that were on the brink have been brought back to health through this process, and fish populations including Atlantic salmon have increased.”
Healthy rivers play a critical role in mitigating climate change. They naturally carry carbon from the land to the ocean, where it is stored for thousands of years. CarbonRun’s solution enhances this natural process. “Our work here has the potential to drive meaningful change on a broader scale,” said Shannon Sterling, CarbonRun Founder, Chief Scientific Officer and Chief Operating Officer. “By restoring the natural chemistry of rivers, we are reviving their role in the global carbon cycle, which is crucial in the fight against climate change.”
The West River Pictou project represents years of scientific innovation coupled with community-driven effort. CarbonRun’s relationship with environmental charities, indigenous and local communities is central to the project’s success. By incorporating local and traditional knowledge, CarbonRun is forging a path toward more sustainable and inclusive environmental solutions.
“This project exemplifies what can be achieved when scientific innovation, local collaboration, and environmental stewardship align,” said Luke Connell, CarbonRun Co-Founder and CEO. “It’s not just about the technology—it’s about working with the people who know these lands and waters best. This marks a significant milestone for CarbonRun, and we’re excited to expand our efforts beyond Nova Scotia.”
Healthy Rivers. Healthy Planet.
