Job Summary

The Senior Director, Science & Operations will be responsible for managing the scientific and operational aspects of CDR projects and R&D. In this role, you will drive forward project timelines, support new project development and stick-handle research and development opportunities. You are a highly driven, positive and ambitious leader. The position will report to, and work closely with, CarbonRun’s Chief Scientific Officer/Chief Operating Officer (CSO/COO). You are able to work across time-zones and travel while juggling multiple projects and initiatives, keeping all moving forward at a fast and efficient pace.

Key Responsibilities
  • Strategic Execution: Collaborate with the CSO/COO to strategize project execution and team building. Lead projects that drive progress towards our strategic goals. Stickhandle projects and initiatives to ensure they are on schedule and deliver high quality products.
  • Team Leadership: Help lead the Science & Operations team by aligning and motivating the team in the strategic direction, ensuring scientific and operational integrity, and proactively resolving issues to maintain high standards of work.
  • Communication: Serve as a key point of contact between internal teams, scientists, universities, and external partners. Ensure project goals, timelines, and updates are communicated clearly and stakeholders are engaged and informed.
  • Document & Asset Creation: Lead the development of high-quality scientific and technical documents, papers, reports, and public-facing materials.
  • Relationship Building: Cultivate and maintain strong partnerships with scientists, project developers, contractors, regulators, and other key stakeholders to support project success and the scientific and operational goals. Build collaborative relationships with experts in the field.
  • Non-Dilutive Funding: Identify and manage non-dilutive funding opportunities such as R&D and science-based grants. Prepare impactful proposals that outline project scopes, feasibility studies, and impact assessments to support ongoing and new initiatives.
  • Project Management: Design and implement detailed project plans for scientific and R&D projects, following best practices and quality metrics. Oversee project progress to ensure deadlines, quality standards, and budgets are met, and manage risks proactively.
  • Project Development: Contribute to project development processes, including feasibility studies, site selection, permitting, and stakeholder engagement. Lead the execution of scientific and operational stages by managing site selection, field data collection, business development coordination, and engagement with stakeholders.
  • Science Development: With CSO, identify new research opportunities that align with CarbonRun’s mission. Lead R&D projects on carbon dioxide removal and environmental restoration strategies.
  • Intellectual Property (IP): Identify, develop and protect IP resulting from our research and innovation. Support and write patent applications.

Qualifications
  • Education and Experience: A graduate degree in a relevant field such as Environmental Science, Water Resources, Geochemistry, Geographic Sciences or Engineering. 5-10 years of experience in scientific or technical operations, or project management with a proven track record in delivering successful projects.
  • Project Management: Ability to manage complex workstreams, complex scientific projects and workstreams, including resource allocation, risk management, identifying and building valuable relationships with a diverse portfolio of project partners.
  • Organizational, Team and Communication Skills: Strong organizational skills are essential. Strong interpersonal skills and a collaborative, solution-oriented approach to addressing operational and project challenges. Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to work collaboratively with internal teams and external stakeholders to drive project success. Expertise in effectively communicating complex scientific concepts to a broad audience. Cultural sensitivity, in both domestic and international contexts.
  • Leadership: Experience or strong potential in leading teams, guiding project execution, and helping lead the science and operation team to achieve strategic goals. Strong emotional intelligence. Willingness to perform all types of tasks to keep the ball rolling and get the job done.
  • Mindset: Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, evolving environment with a proactive and results-driven, ambitious mindset, with well-developed critical-thinking skills.
